What Monsoon Conditions Do to Pest Behavior

To understand the post-monsoon pest surge, it helps to understand what monsoon season actually changes in the environment. Arizona’s pre-monsoon months are hot and extremely dry. Many pests are present but constrained by the conditions, limiting their activity to conserve hydration and staying close to whatever water sources they can find. When monsoon rains arrive, that constraint lifts almost overnight.

Soil that has been baked dry for months suddenly absorbs moisture and becomes workable again. Insects that lay eggs in soil begin reproductive cycles. Termites that have been foraging underground respond to moisture and temperature cues that trigger swarming. Standing water appears in hundreds of locations across every neighborhood. Humidity rises. Food sources, including the insects that other pests feed on, suddenly become abundant.

Have you ever seen the documentaries about how all the zebras and wildebeest migrate to the Serengeti Plains in Africa after the rains, and then the predators show up? Well, monsoon season in Arizona is the start of a similar productive period for insects and pests.

And when pests get productive, homeowners need to get busy if they want to stay in control. Here are some of the challenges Arizona homeowners face.

Termites

Among the most consequential monsoon pests, termites deserve to be at the top of the list of concerns. Arizona is home to several termite species, but the subterranean termite, particularly Heterotermes aureus, commonly called the desert subterranean termite, is the species most closely tied to monsoon season activity.

Termite swarms in Arizona are strongly triggered by the combination of heat and the moisture that follows monsoon rainfall. Winged reproductive termites, called alates, emerge from mature colonies in large numbers to mate and establish new colonies. These swarms often occur in the evening hours following a monsoon storm and can involve thousands of insects. Homeowners frequently mistake swarms for flying ants, which are similar in size but distinguishable by straight antennae, equal-length wings, and a uniform body width in termites versus the pinched waist and unequal wings of ants.

Finding a termite swarm in or near your home does not automatically mean your structure is infested, but it does mean active colonies are present in the immediate area. Swarming termites that find their way inside and locate wood in contact with soil or moisture are capable of establishing new colonies. Post-monsoon is one of the most important times of year to inspect for mud tubes — the pencil-width earthen tunnels that subterranean termites build along foundations, walls, and plumbing as protected travel routes, and that signal a colony — and a problem.

Scorpions

Bark scorpions are present in the Phoenix area year-round, but monsoon season changes their behavior in ways that increases the potential for contact with people. Rainfall saturates desert soil and drives scorpions out of their underground refuges and into structures. They follow the same entry points they always use — gaps around pipes, poorly sealed door frames, block wall voids — but do so in greater numbers and with greater urgency during and after heavy rain events.

Monsoon humidity also supports higher cricket populations, and crickets are the primary food source for bark scorpions. More crickets in and around your home means more scorpion activity in pursuit of them. Monsoon evenings, when scorpions are naturally active and conditions push them toward structures, represent the highest-contact-risk period of the year for Arizona residents and their pets.

Checking interior spaces with a UV blacklight after monsoon events (scorpions fluoresce bright green or blue under ultraviolet light) is a practical habit for households in scorpion-active areas to determine whether you have a scorpion problem.

Mosquitoes

Monsoon rains create standing water in hundreds of locations across every Phoenix neighborhood simultaneously. With quantities of water appearing that can last seven to ten days in plant saucers, ground depressions, or left out buckets or bowls, mosquito larvae can complete development and emerge as breeding adults. The math compounds quickly: one productive water source generates hundreds of mosquitoes, each capable of biting multiple times and laying additional eggs.

Aedes aegypti, the yellow fever mosquito established throughout the Valley, breeds in small containers and is active during daylight hours. Culex quinquefasciatus, the southern house mosquito and the primary carrier of West Nile virus in Arizona, breeds in larger, organically enriched water sources and is most active from dusk through early morning. Both species see population explosions following monsoon rains.

Maricopa County documents West Nile virus cases in human residents and in sentinel chickens monitored across the county virtually every year. Eliminating standing water from your property within a week of rainfall is the single most effective personal action you can take to reduce mosquito exposure and keep populations at bay. Unfortunately, however, if your neighbors are not as diligent about eliminating standing water on their property, your efforts might not stave off mosquito problems.

Cockroaches

American cockroaches — the large, reddish-brown species sometimes called palmetto bugs — are strongly associated with monsoon conditions in Phoenix. They live in sewer systems, storm drains, and the landscape surrounding structures, and they move toward buildings when heavy rain floods their outdoor habitat.

These cockroaches can enter homes through floor drains, gaps around plumbing penetrations, and poorly sealed exterior doors. They are primarily outdoor insects that come inside opportunistically, which means their monsoon intrusion into living spaces is directly tied to rain intensity and drainage conditions around the home. Finding one or two American cockroaches inside during monsoon season is common; finding them regularly suggests an entry point worth locating and sealing.

German cockroaches are a separate concern. They are indoor insects that do not migrate with the rain; however, monsoon humidity can support faster reproduction in existing indoor populations if conditions inside the home allow. Bottom line? If you see cockroaches in your home, you need to address it.

Ants

Several ant species in Arizona respond to monsoon rains with accelerated colony activity, including fire ants, harvester ants, and various pavement and odorous house ant species. Like termites, many ant species use monsoon conditions to trigger mating flights and new colony establishment. Fire ant colonies, in particular, respond to flooding by forming living rafts and relocating to drier ground, which can bring entire colonies into contact with structures they would not otherwise approach.

Monsoon rain also softens soil and makes new nesting sites available, which can shift existing colonies closer to foundations and outdoor living areas than they were positioned before the rains arrived. Keep an eye out for new ant colonies on or near your property.

Roof Rats

Less visible but worth being aware of, roof rats become more active following monsoon events. These rodents live in trees, dense vegetation, and the upper portions of structures. Monsoon-supported growth of desert vegetation provides expanded habitat and food sources, and the general increase in insect activity gives roof rats a more abundant food supply. They enter homes through roof lines, gaps around eave vents, and openings where utilities penetrate the roofline.

A higher population of roof rats means a greater likelihood that rats seeking suitable habitat may decide your home is ideal, so keeping an eye out for signs of roof rats in the weeks following monsoon events is prudent.

What You Can Do To Lower Pest Invasions

Regardless of which pests concern you most, several actions taken at the start of and during monsoon season reduce your exposure across the board.

  • Walk your property after each significant rain and eliminate any standing water within 24 to 48 hours. 

  • Inspect your foundation, door frames, garage door seals, and any exterior utility penetrations for gaps that need sealing. 

  • Check your attic vents and roofline for openings that could admit roof rats. 

  • Pull stored items away from block walls, clear debris from along the foundation, and make sure exterior lighting does not draw insects directly toward entry points.

  • Inside, keep floor drains covered when not in use, inspect under sinks and around plumbing penetrations for gaps, and seal any openings in baseboards or walls you have been meaning to address.

These are not complex projects, but they make a measurable difference in what gets inside your home.

Some Special Factors to Consider in 2026

This year’s monsoon season carries an additional factor worth understanding. A significant El Niño event has developed in the Pacific Ocean. Forecasters are watching it closely, and they expect it to strengthen into the 2026-27 winter, deeming it a Super El Niño, comparable in intensity to the historic weather events of 1982, 1997, and 2015.

For Arizona homeowners, the pest implications of this pattern are direct. Experts predict that the warmer temperatures and changing ocean patterns may help increase monsoon moisture across the state this year, while also warning that conditions can change quickly throughout the summer. More monsoon moisture means more standing water, more saturated soil, and more of the precise conditions that trigger termite swarming, scorpion displacement, mosquito breeding, and the movement of cockroaches and rodents toward structures.

A high-magnitude El Niño can bring wetter winters and stronger storms to Arizona, which means the pest pressure that typically eases after monsoon season winds down in late September may extend further into fall than in a typical year. If this season’s atmospheric conditions develop as forecasters currently project, the argument for proactive pest treatment before monsoon activity peaks is stronger this year than it has been in some time.
